SUPRAPHON NEW RELEASE
Bohuslav Martinu – Juliette

Albeit the recognition and success that his opera Juliette achieved, the Three Fragments from the Opera Juliette had to wait some 70 years for its first performance. This was entrusted to the safe hands of that most competent of conductors Sir Charles Mackerras. Thanks to Martinu’s dreamily beautiful music and the outstanding performance of all the interpreters (with Magdalena Kožená and Steve Davislim at the forefront), the performance was a joint triumph. This is supplemented here by the orchestral suite from the same opera, which sensitively treats the music of with the “dreamy logic” of the original.

Monteverdi – L’Orfeo

Monteverdi’s Orfeo is to be considered the first mature Opera in history. Its incredible modernness leaves the spectator amazed. In this Orfeo, Luigi Pizzi in a co-effort with ”Teatro Real” and ”La Fenice”, has offered a very attractive, even original staging: the beauty of the Palace, the rich colour of 17th century costumes and the movement of the extras and dancers. William Christie’s direction of the orchestra and chorus of Les Arts Florissants is a serious reading of great delicacy which is fully matching with Pizzi’s ideas. The cast is thoroughly suited, and musical at every turn.

Haydn – Complete Overtures

This collection of the 22 extant overtures by Joseph Haydn charts the course of the composer’s creative career from its beginnings in the late baroque, via Classicism to the onset of a wholly new, Romantic musical idiom. From Acide (1762/63) to The Seasons (1801), the programme comprises overtures to operas, German Singspiele and oratorios, testifying to Haydn’s unwavering creative power and his seemingly infinite potential for development. This development is particularly striking in the present recordings, which are based on the original parts used at the first performances.

Johann Sebastian Bach – Mass in B minor

Sigiswald Kuijken’s new production, the h-Moll-Messe of J.S. Bach (CC 72316) also throws this new, brilliant light on a old masterwork, which sounds fresh and pure because of the vision of conductor Sigiswald Kuijken. The bare but beautiful essentials come to light as if the dust was wiped away of all these ages of performances and Kuijken goes back to the core of the work, to its inner beauty. He does this by way of not using a choir but single solo voices in the 'choir'-parts. Just concentrating on the music, that is what Kuijken does. And that is what he does best: a total accomplishment!

Jon Balke – Siwan

The listener is at first struck by the power of Amina Alaoui’s voice, soaring above Jon Balke’s remarkable compositions for baroque ensemble - with soloists drawn from jazz, scattered improvisational traditions, and the world of early music. Behind this remarkable musical integration is a web of philosophical, historical, and literary interconnections, as Balke and Alaoui set texts from Sufi poets, Christian mystics, troubadours and more. Setting new standards in transcultural music, Siwan shows what can be made today when artists of the most divergent background pool their energies.

Monteverdi - Scherzi Musicali

In a certain way, this new disc from La Venexiana can be thought of as having the qualities of a pause or “interval” following the Monteverdian intensity of recent years – during which time the group has recorded the entirety of the madrigals by the Mantuan author (eight volumes), the Selva morale e spirituale and L’Orfeo – and before going on to tackle new and ambitious projects. We find ourselves before the mature phase of the Monteverdian output, Monteverdi as precursor, experimenter and innovator. The pizzicati from the theorbos, the melodic cornetto, the swing of the voice… pure delight.

Gesualdo – Madrigals, Book V

The Globe label presents two flamboyant and rigorous versions of Carlo Gesualdo’s –the enfant terrible of the madrigalistic world- Fifth and Sixth Book of Madrigals. With a propulsive and perfectly-narrowed expressive energy, members of the Kassiopeia Quintet define with wondrous contrast and lyric abandonment Gesualdo’s beautiful musical meanings in a reading that goes straight to the top. Soloists and ensemble, so much acquainted to this repertoire, sing with a captivating sense of passion and beauty, touching these staves of silk and gold with ease and perfection.

Schnittke – Symphony nº 9

Composed shortly before his death, Schnittke’s ultimate symphony is an unusual “Ninth”. The composer’s widow treated it as a testament and was long doubtful whom to entrust with the difficult task of deciphering and reconstructing the highly expressive three movements for large orchestra. She finally settled on Alexander Raskatov, who thought that Schnittke had intended to write a fourth movement. Both pieces were given their first performances in 2007 by the musicians of this world première recording which feautures the Hilliard Ensemble and conductor Dennis Russell Davies.

Antonio Valente - Intavolatura de Cimbalo

Antonio Valente (c.1520-c.1580) must have been a remarkable man, even though there is only very little known about him. Blind from childhood, he was (at least from time to time) active in Naples as a harpsichordist and organist as well as a teacher of his instruments. As part of his teaching activities he declared that, with his Method, Intavolatura de Cimbalo, those "who have absolutely no previous experience of music, without any help from a teacher" could learn the art of playing the harpsichord. From this developed an early system of "playing by numbers", as well as a clever technique of using the “latest hits” for highly virtuoso variations.

Debussy-Stravinsky - Le Sacre

Igor Stravinsky and Claude Debussy, although contemporaries, followed very different musical paths. Whereas Stravinsky went on the attack with shocking new rhythmic and metric devices, Debussy revolutionised music in a much more subtle way: with harmonic schemes that are no longer rooted in tonality, and a musical language that offers a freedom not found in the cold logic of Stravinsky, banning herewith constructivist moments via an approach to open form never previously encountered.

Aram Khachaturian – Spartacus

Fifteen years passed since the idea of “Spartacus” came to the composer’s mind till its first night. The famous librettist and specialist in drama study N. Volkov initiated the creation of the ballet on the antique subject – in 1940 he suggested Aram Khachaturian (1903–1978) composing it. The composer wrote: “Spartacus” was conceived as a monumental narration about the mighty avalanche of the antique slaves uprising who defended a person’s freedom and to whom. In fact, the creation of the ballet music took eight months and a half though the whole work lasted for three years and a half.
