TUDOR NEW RELEASE
Gustav Mahler - Symphony Nº 1, “Titan”
After his mahlerian baptism with a spectacular Fifth Symphony, British conductor Jonathan Nott takes a new ride on Mahler with his First Symphony. Like the previous symphonic effort, this performance shows an iron-wielded precision and a well-carried sharpness of sound. The Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, finely polished since Nott’s arrival in 2000, offers a powerful, crystal-clear performace, shining in all its glory thanks to this SACD presentation.

BIS DVD NEW RELEASE
Christian Lindberg – The total musician
BIS’ first-ever DVD is dedicated to one of the label’s most charismatic and longest-standing artists: Christian Lindberg. It forms an extensive -3h 40 minutes- portrayal of this multi-facetted musician who since his début on disc in 1984 almost single-handedly has turned the trombone into a solo instrument. But those who have followed his career will know that over the past few years Lindberg has also been developing a reputation as a composer and conductor. In celebration of his 50th birthday, BIS is therefore releasing this DVD which reflects all aspects of his extraordinary career. The DVD includes two hour-long documentaries.

NEOS NEW RELEASE
Cage – Seven – Quartets I-VIII
John Cage's Quartets I-VIII is one of the most unusual and sophisticated orchestral works I know. It was written for the bicentennial of the United States of America. Cage used eight old American chorales, which he then reformed into an entirely new work with the help of the Chinese oracular work I Ching. The basic idea is to have just four instruments of the orchestra playing together at any time. As a result new groups are constantly forming into variously composed quartets. The piece seems very simple from looking at the score. But in fact the fragmentary character of the instrumentation makes it a great challenge to perform.

CHRISTOPHORUS NEW RELEASE
The Purcell brothers– Chamber Music
Henry Purcell has enjoyed enduring fame whereas his brother Daniel, five years his junior, has been completely eclipsed over the course of the centuries. However, Daniel was also a successful composer in his day – particularly of theatre music in the years following his brother's premature death. Here Ensemble juxtapose works by Daniel Purcell and Henry Purcell, demonstrating the stylistic diversity of their music and the remarkable compositional abilities of both men. The result is an exciting, varied and wholly compelling programme.

Franz Schubert – Sakontala
The hope of working more closely together with theatres in Vienna led Franz Schubert to devote himself in 1821 to the oriental subject of Sakontala, the hermit’s daughter. Unfortunately, only a few drafts and sketches of the first two acts of this project have been preserved in autograph. However, thanks to the recent rediscovery of the complete libretto and to a skillful reconstruction by Karl Aage Rasmussen, this opera is recorded here for the first time. Not least, thanks to the interpretation by Frieder Bernius and a group of renowned soloists, this CD is a “must” for all Schubert lovers and lovers of 19th century opera.

Ludwig Güttler & the Bach Collegium Leipzig
The chamber music of the 18th century is impressive, due to its stylistic and formal variety. Ludwig Güttler’s recording “Sonate e Concerti”, featuring works from Bach to Vivaldi, offers insight into this fascinating diversity. Such a wide-ranging repertoire calls for an outstanding artist such as Ludwig Güttler, who for many years has immersed himself intensely in this music. With this CD –together with the Leipzig Bach-Collegium– he once again underscores his outstanding reputation as a virtuoso soloist on the trumpet and corno da caccia.

Mel Bonis – Piano Quartets
Mel Bonis (1858-1937), the most important woman composer of the French Belle Époque, has long been forgotten in the music world. Wrongly so, thus the judgment of the Mozart Piano Quartet, and in honor of the 150th anniversary of her birth its members are now presenting her two Piano Quartets with enthusiasm and winning expertise. “I never would have believed that a woman could write something like this!“ Camille Saint-Saëns exclaimed in wonder of her first Piano Quartet of 1901.

Hank Roberts with Marc Ducret & Jim Black – Green
After the success of their first European tour, the new Hank Roberts Trio quickly develops the Green concept, which is recorded in Munich with short notice. Collaborating with guitar player Marc Ducret and drummer Jim Black, Roberts creates a CD that has the melancolic appeal to be found in indie America’s post-rock, mixing Indian chanting, rock ‘n’ roll and American Folk music and that demonstrates a compositive and instrumental expression more serene than Robert’s previous efforts. Green is a work created by three empathic individual musicians at the peak of their careers.

Henrico Albicastro – 12 concerti a quattro op.7
Henrico Albicastro (1661-1730) was a fairly productive composer. The pieces issued between 1701-1706 under the by the Amsterdam music publisher Estienne Roger are a rather compact series of nine opuses. They comprise collections of violin sonatas (opp.2, 3, 5, 6 and 9), trio sonatas (opp.1, 4 and 8), and string concertos (op.7) in a decidedly Italianate idiom (i.e. that of Corelli), but slightly more angular and with occasionally more unexpected turns.

GALA NEW RELEASE
Giuseppe Verdi – Aida
Of all Aida studio recordings made in the fifties this one was certainly poorly aired. In its time it was released by the Capitol label and now has been recovered by Gala. Being its bigger characteristic to feature the powerful voice of recognised rumanian soprano Stella Roman, who displays a warm and sumptuous middle-range voice, the rest of the cast is no less astounding: the american mezzo Sylvia Sawy, who shows a beautiful soprano texture and the bold Gino Sarri, Antonio Manca Serra, Vittorio Tattozzi & Franco Pugliese. At the helm is conductor Alberto Paoletti, one of the greatests masters who ever worked for RAI.

Rafael Bonavita – Al Compás de la Vihuela
This CD contains very well-known vihuela works for everyone who appreciates the legacy of this unique instrument (Narváez, Fuenllana, Mudarra, Milán); Nonetheless, Rafael Bonavita’s performance sounds brand new, fully personal. The musician shows an astounding technique, a strong freedom of will and that renaissance sensibility mentioned by Spanish thinkers from the 16th Century as well. All of this makes for a truly beautiful CD, a not-to-be-missed addition to this instrument’s already large recorded history that is intented to clear its ways through the 21st Century.

His Boston Symphony Orchestra became one of the finest in the world, and the recordings made between 1928 and 1950 are a clear testimony to his talent.
