A contemporary of Montsalvatge and Surinyach, the Barcelona-born Lluís Benejam i Agell (1914-1968) is another musical figure from Spain’s recent history whose compositions demand urgent rediscovery. Coupling great rhythmic impulse and a powerful lyrical inspiration, his music perfectly displays a command of form, a sense of structure and a strong awareness of timbric concerns which will surprise many.
