A lush symphonic serenade by one of Hollywood's greatest composers, coupled with Griffes's Roman Sketches - the world premiere recording of the orchestrated version Korngold is well-known for having created some of the most famous and enduring film soundtracks during the golden age of Hollywood, including The Sea Hawk, The Adventures of Robin Hood, King's Row and Deception. He was one of the first composers to make a success of writing for both cinema and concert hall, and to demonstrate that the quality of music didn't need to suffer simply because it was being written for a specific function. He was key in establishing the unmistakable 'Hollywood' sound that we are all familiar with, and his compositional style is still one of the most important influences on film composers today The Symphonic Serenade contains themes originally written for the films Captain Blood and Anthony Adverse and exhibits Korngold's equal skill in writing for screen and concert hall Although less well-known than Korngold, the music of Charles Griffes is highly regarded in his native America. This is the world premiere recording of his Roman Sketches, a beautiful, impressionist-style piece which displays his mastery of colourful orchestral writing, which has been likened to that of Ravel and Debussy. The piece was originally written for piano, and Griffes had begun to orchestrate it before his untimely death at the age of just 35. The orchestration has been completed by Craig Leon following careful study of Griffes's manuscripts The London Symphony Orchestra perform both pieces with sensitivity and power, under the baton of young conductor Simone Pittau who, as a member of the Ennio Morricone orchestra, has a great understanding of cinematic music |
