This is the first time Kurt Sanderling, one of Germany’s most distinguished conductors, has appeared on BBC Legends. This live performance of 1981, which offers a valuable insight on Sanderling’s powers when commanding the orchestra later to be known as BBC Philharmonic has been requested frequently. Sanderling came from a generation of conductors who liked to ‘live with the score’, carefully paying attention to every detail contained in the page, in the mold of Klemperer and Walter. This live 1981 recording is superbly engineered and comes from the BBC’s Studios in Manchester.
