For many years, all attempted reconstructions or revivals of Rodrigo were dependent on the autograph draft score, which it has survived only in fragmentary form. Hence Friedrich Chrysander had to print this fragmentary version in his Händel-Gesamtausgabe in 1873 as the first and until recently the only edition of Rodrigo. Thus reconstructed and published under the auspices of the Hallische Händel-Ausgabe, this opera, one of the most important works of his Italian period, is now accessible once more in a recorded performance almost exactly three hundred years after its premiere.
