This CD release pays tribute to Martinu and the 50th anniversary of his death in 2009. Star conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy, who conducts the Sinfonieorchester Basel on this disc, is known as a great champion of Czech music. These recordings of Second and Fourth Piano Concertos feature acclaimed pianist and Martinu expert Robert Kolinsky as soloist. The Fourth Concerto, has been applauded as one of 20th century’s most exciting scores for piano. Les Fresques de Piero della Francesca remains one of Martinu’s most performed works and its considered to be among Martinu’s greatest creations.
