The pianist Anna Zassimova began occupying herself with the composer Georgy (Georges) Catoire almost ten years ago in her native Moscow. Her investigations have been published in Russia and Germany (last year with the German Tchaikovsky Society), she has written the standard dissertation on Catoire, and she has initiated many concerts as well as the present release. And we are in complete agreement with her: the time for the rediscovery of this fascinating music is long overdue. Catoire – composer, brilliant pianist, and later a member of the faculty at the Moscow Conservatory – was from an old, distinguished family and displayed his extraordinary musical capabilities at an early age. Sometimes termed the first Russian Wagnerian, Catoire produced an oeuvre exhibiting influences from French music as well as features that were always developed somewhat to the side of the various main currents of his time. His innovations in musical language were combined with a strikingly free treatment of the traditional element of the Russian compositional school. Catoire’s works for violin and piano – interpreted here by Anna Zassimova and Laurent Albrecht Breuninger – reveal his full beauty with fine sophistication, atmospheric freedom, harmonic richness, and intensive emotional depth.
